GREEN MATCHA VS BLUE MATCHA

We often get asked “what is the difference between the original Matcha Ninja and Blue Ninja aka “blue matcha”?”

In today’s post we will share what makes these two teas so unique and some of the ways they are similar.

To begin, let’s break down what matcha means.

WHAT IS MATCHA?

blue matcha vs green matcha

Matcha is a Japanese word— “ma” meaning rubbed or ground and “cha” meaning tea. Generally when you hear the word matcha, you think of ground green tea leaves as matcha is most commonly associated with. Despite the green tea association, matcha at its root means “ground tea”.

What is the difference between blue and green matcha?

The biggest fundamental difference is that green matcha and blue matcha are two entirely different plants.

Matcha Ninja (green) comes from the tea plant, called the camilia sinsnus. The material exclusively used for making matcha is a green tea leaf called tencha.

Blue Matcha is actually made from blue butterfly pea flowers. The flowers are dried and ground into a fine blue powder, this is what Blue Ninja is made up entirely of.

Blue Ninja and Matcha Ninja are both ground teas, they just come from different plants.

TASTE DIFFERENCE

When it comes to taste, the two teas are very different— one thing in common being that they are both smooth and delicious.

Matcha Ninja has a strong green tea taste. It is more grassy and earthy with a touch of natural sweetness. For some, matcha can have more of an acquired taste that you grow to enjoy more and more over time.

Blue Ninja is subtle, light and more floral tasting. It’s easy to like right off the bat and has a versatile flavour that can easily be incorporated into smoothies, baking and cooking.
