MEET THE FOUNDER
Matcha Ninja began in 2014 when Steve Shannon switched to drinking matcha instead of coffee. Steve felt a significant shift in his energy levels, sleep habits and quality, and mental clarity. Gone were the days of the jittery ups and downs that came with mugs of coffee, matcha provided the slow-release of caffeine that didn’t crash or overstimulate.
Loving the sense of renewed energy, focus, and sleep quality, Steve began to notice some of the hurdles that prevented him from consistently maintaining this healthier habit.
Time was always a problem with matcha. Modern life is busy and sometimes unpredictable, a morning matcha generally wasn’t possible due to the time needed to prepare it with the right temperatures and whisk.
The second challenge was taste. Bitterness is a common problem with readily available matcha varieties and this led to adding sugar, flavouring, or additives to mask the flavour.
There was space for ceremonial grade matcha that was simple to prepare, tasted delicious, and didn’t include any added extras. Steve set out to create exactly this.
Like the tea, Matcha Ninja had a very organic start. The matcha first appeared at local farmers’ markets around Toronto, Canada, where Steve was living at the time. As Matcha Ninja’s mission and tea were shared with their neighbours, word started to get around. Soon, some of the trendiest cafes and grocery stores in the city began serving and stocking Matcha Ninja.
Today, Matcha Ninja is one of the largest matcha companies in North America, with growing matcha lovers in Europe and across the globe.

We want matcha to be easy and accessible to everyone.
Matcha Ninja was founded with the goal of making matcha simple, easy, and delicious. The top quality matcha (ceremonial grade matcha) takes time to prepare. Unfortunately many of our modern lives don’t always allow for a window of time to make the matcha we want, so we end up compromising or going without.
We felt we needed to create the perfect solution - super smooth matcha that works in hot and cold water, without a whisk.
This vision led to our original line of products: ceremonial grade matcha, microground to a perfectly fine powder, without the bitterness and without compromise on quality.
Since we started, we’ve expanded our teas and blends with the same purpose; to make smooth, delicious teas simple.
